Holiday driving has been blissful, the roads have been unclogged but just wait till the schools go back, all that lovely space on the roads disappears and we're back to ye olde road rage. Back to rushing around as if there are not enough hours in the day. Why is it that things like other peoples bad road manners suddenly become huge issues, when other times it is not even noticedm
Motivational gurus make money insisting that we stay in the moment, instead of dreaming of the future, or rehashing the past we are to accept the present and enjoy all it holds. This is difficult to do when driving, as its like being on autopilot. I drove to work today but don't remember anything about the drive. The scenery did not register at all. The idea of being in the moment is easier to practise if its a fun activity. The morning rush is not top of that list for any of us. The idea is to be active and enjoy each moment which is difficult when distracted. It could be the most beautiful day out there but most of the time we are elsewhere.
Apart from paying attention to the road, and actively driving which is rewarding on its own, just learning how to see takes mundane experience into the realm of art. Streets washed clean by the rain look new, and even the oil on the roads looks like a psychedelic art form. Noticing the small things is always rewarding, and makes us better drivers if we just stay in the moment.
Being distracted allows accidents, how many times do rear end collisions happen because we are not paying attention.
Apparently life will change for the better if we stay focused and in the present. So instead of smelling the roses I have decided to at least note that there are roses out there.
